What can I expect?

A typical salt therapy session lasts for 45 minutes. The therapy involves sitting in the salt room in a zero gravity lounge chair. The lights will dim and you will hear relaxing music. The room temperature and humidity is maintained at a comfortable level. Most people like to close their eyes, and some will fall asleep or meditate.

Salt therapy may produce a slight skin irritation in some individuals that will disappear after a few sessions. Some people will experience a mild salt taste on their lips, similar to being by the ocean. Others may experience a mild throat tickle, which can be easily treated by sipping warm water after the session. Most people will experience increased mucous production. This will present itself in the form of a runny nose or a productive cough after the session. This is the body’s natural mechanism for elimination of toxins, pollens, and viruses. If you have ever smoked in the past, you may experience a period of cough and mucous production as your body naturally clears the lungs of residual toxins. Most asthmatics will also experience an initial period of increased mucous production and cough as the body decreases inflammation, opens airways, and expels the stagnant mucous.

Salt Room Etiquette

    •    Always arrive 15 minutes early for each appointment.
    •    Sessions begin promptly at the top of every hour.
    •    Once a session begins, no one will be permitted to enter the treatment room, so as not to disturb clients who have started a   treatment session.
    •    Do not use or wear any perfumes, lotions, oils, fragrances, etc.  They can interfere with the therapy.
   •    Do not exit the therapy room once a session has started, unless it is an emergency.
    •    Please use the restroom, wash your hands, and/or your child’s hands prior to your session.
   •    Electronic devices (phones, iPads, iPods, smartphones, mp3 players, etc.) are permitted in the therapy room only when used with earphones.  Ringers must be turned off.  We cannot be held responsible for any damage the salt may cause to these devices.
    •    Dress in comfortable clothing.  If you are here for a skin condition, we suggest tank tops and shorts.

The salt room is a quiet room.  No talking unless it’s an emergency and you need assistance.  Quiet meditation, reading and sleeping are fine.  Please be respectful and considerate of others in a group session.

How many treatments will I need?

Every experience is different, and it depends on the type and severity of your condition. Based on the research, we would recommend a course of 12-15 treatments, preferably within 4-8 weeks. You may feel some improvement after a single session, but a series of treatments is required to achieve long-term results. For mild conditions, 6-8 treatments may be enough. Some people use treatments as a preventative measure to avoid the common cold, and other respiratory viruses.

What’s the difference between salt therapy and sea air?

The natural anti-inflammatory effect of salt, is it’s ability to draw fluid. When you breathe in sea air, it is already moist and has less of an anti-inflammatory effect. When you breathe in dry salt aerosol in a salt room, the minute particles line your airways and draw out the fluid from the inflamed airway. This fluid, now mixed with the salt goes to work on cleaning the walls of the airways, resulting in the sufferer coughing up the congestion.

What about the concern that salt is bad for you?

Consuming too much salt is linked to high blood pressure. With salt therapy, you are inhaling a dry salt aerosol, which only enters your respiratory system, not your digestive tract. The salt particles are so fine that even if you were to eat that amount, it would not pose a risk to your health.
